Introduction to the Subject of English Language and Literature
The subject of “ English Language and Literature” in Hangzhou University of Electronic Science and Technology has four research directions: British and American literature, English linguistics, translation theory and practice, and cross-cultural communication. The direction of British and American literature takes various literary schools, literary works and theories of British and American countries as its research objects, especially focusing on the study of American regional literature and minority literature;English linguistics focuses on stylistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis and second language acquisition, and explores the application of linguistic theories in English teaching and translation practice. The direction of translation theory and practice pays special attention to the study of translation at various cultural levels and the discussion of the cultural orientation of translation;The direction of cross-cultural communication is to study the cultural differences between China and foreign countries and their respective basic cultural stereotypes, and to pay attention to the reflection of the differences in thinking patterns between China and foreign countries in texts. This discipline has a strong scientific research strength, a higher level of professional teachers—— the existing 21 master's supervisors, including 10 professors, 11 associate professors, among which 12 hold doctorates. Most of the tutors have visited famous universities in the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia. All the tutors have made achievements in their respective research fields, and some of them are also experts in the appraisal of the achievements of the National Social Science Fund projects as well as in the 12th Five-Year Plan Social Science Discipline Group of Zhejiang Province.
A Brief Introduction to the Postgraduate Course of English Language and Literature
Contemporary Western Literary Theory: This course mainly introduces the development process and characteristics of contemporary Western literary theory, the academic propositions and theoretical characteristics of various schools, and the representative figures and works of various schools.Explain the distinctive characteristics of the transformation of the 20th century Western literary theory and the important trend of the transfer of modern artistic spirit to post-modern aesthetic cultural value, as well as the unprecedented complexity of related issues.
General Linguistics: Teaching the basic concepts, theories, principles and methods of linguistics.The contents include: language overview, phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, language and culture, linguistics and translation, linguistics and literature, foreign language acquisition and foreign language education technology.The key contents of the course are: 1) the basic concepts of linguistic semiotics;2) The relationship between morphology and Syntax;3) The relationship among grammar, semantics and pragmatics.
Research on the masterpieces of British and American literature: This course aims to provide students with an overall understanding of the formation and development of British and American literature;By reading classical works such as novels, poems and dramas in British and American literature, we can learn the basic elements of various literary styles, master the basic theories and methods of literary criticism in an all-round way, and analyze the works with relevant theories and methods.
Contemporary Translation Theory: This course systematically introduces contemporary translation theory and its application in translation studies from the perspectives of English-Chinese cultural comparison, functional linguistics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and cognitive linguistics, so that students can understand and master the knowledge of translation theory, the descriptive interpretation of translation theory on translation practice, and the interaction between theory and practice.Strengthen students' theoretical consciousness and lay a good theoretical foundation for their academic research and writing papers.
Research Methodology: This course introduces the main research methods of linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, translation, intercultural communication and related disciplines (such as stylistics).The course includes 12 chapters, focusing on the research methods of foreign language teaching, literature review, opening reports, academic papers and dissertation writing, the format, requirements and declaration of scientific research reports, and the characteristics of academic language.
Intercultural communication: the teaching content of this course mainly includes the background and introduction of intercultural communication, the understanding of the essence of cultural and social pluralism, the understanding of intercultural language and non-language communication, cultural adaptation and communication effectiveness, and the factors that have social impact on intercultural communication. The purpose of teaching is to enable students to recognize different world views, values, thinking processes, customs, expectations, communicative styles, language behaviors and non-verbal behaviors, and to analyze the characteristics of cultural differences as the core, and to analyze the results of effective and ineffective cross-cultural communication. The key factors are to warn people to abandon their own prejudice and judgment standards in the era of multicultural coexistence, cultivate sensitivity to culture, shorten cultural distance, develop intercultural communication skills, communicate on the basis of mutual sharing, and explore common Goals and principles to achieve effective cross-cultural communication.
Discourse analysis: This course aims to introduce and discuss the basic theory, research scope and research methods of discourse analysis, and to guide students to understand the role of language, image and other symbols in meaning construction.
The main contents include discourse analysis based on systemic functional grammar, discourse analysis of discourse pragmatics, critical discourse analysis, multimodal discourse analysis and cultural discourse analysis. The discourse analysis and multimodal discourse based on systemic functional grammar Analysis is the focus of the course. Through the study of this course, students will initially grasp the role of systemic functional grammar, speech act, conversational analysis, critical discourse analysis, multimodal discourse, cultural discourse and other theories in discourse analysis, and obtain knowledge of oral and written discourse analysis. Skills, with a certain ability to use discourse analysis theory to interpret linguistic phenomena and visual texts.
English translation of classics: This course aims to enhance students’ reading comprehension of Chinese ancient texts, improve their level of English translation, and arm them with the ability of conducting comparative research on a variety of translations. At the same time, this course will deepen our postgraduates’ understanding of China's splendid culture as well as make up for their relatively insufficient comprehension of our mother tongue culture. It will also improve our professional master students’ abilities to promote Chinese culture, and enhance their intercultural communication skills. This course intends to introduce the basic theories and methods of English translation of Chinese cultural classics, select representative passages of classics along with their various translations for discussion, and try to do some comparative reading and analyze on Western classics.
